New IBM division to develop and manufacture custom chips

IBM has announced the creation of a new division – IBM Engineering & Technology Services, which, as the name suggests, will provide comprehensive services for the development, manufacturing and consulting of OEMs.

The first mentions of the formation of a new division appeared in print back in June, when the IBM Microelectronics Division announced the layoff of 1,500 of its employees and the formation of a high-end manufacturing division. The new division currently employs about 700 IBM employees and will increase to 1,000 next year.

IBM Engineering & Technology Services intends to focus on four main categories:

  • Business solutions: production optimization, e-design, including certification and web hosting, consultations on production upgrades, technology migration, including the transition to SOI
  • Technological optimization: optimization of the production of silicon wafers, chips, integrated matrices; frequency and power development of alternative power technologies and frequency bands; analysis of the output level of finished products and optimization of the simulation of chips, modules and boards
  • System solutions: component and platform development, system level optimization, software and hardware testing
  • Technological outsourcing: production of semiconductors, provision of services for the full cycle of development and production of microcircuits and system solutions

The most interesting thing is that the division of IBM Engineering & Technology Services already has its first customers. Today's Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports that IBM has already signed agreements with Minolta and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) to provide them with technical services. SCE orders communication chips from IBM for PlayStation2 game consoles. For Minolta, IBM will design and manufacture controls that will be used in new types of combined office devices.
